Description
Audi A1 (Typ 8X) Service and Repair Manual — 2010 to 2018
The first-generation Audi A1 is a car that punishes guesswork. It shares its PQ25 platform with the VW Polo and SEAT Ibiza, but the engines and gearboxes Audi fitted to it carry two failure modes that have ruined more A1s than rust ever will: the EA111 timing chain tensioner, and the DQ200 seven-speed dry-clutch DSG.
Both are fixable. Both are commonly misdiagnosed. And in both cases the difference between a repair that lasts and a repair that fails again in six months comes down to following the correct procedure, in the correct order, with the correct part revision.
That is what this documentation set is for.
What the A1 8X is
Produced from 2010 to 2018, the 8X was Audi’s first modern supermini — a premium small car built on Volkswagen Group’s PQ25 platform. The three-door hatch launched first, joined by the five-door Sportback (8XA) in 2012.
A significant facelift arrived in 2015, and it matters more than a cosmetic refresh usually does: it brought the switch from the older EA111 engine family to the newer EA211 range, including a 1.0 TFSI three-cylinder. If you own an A1, knowing which side of 2015 your car falls on determines which timing system you have, which service intervals apply, and which faults you should be looking for first.
The range topped out with the S1 and S1 Sportback (2014–2018) — a 231 PS 2.0 TFSI with Haldex all-wheel drive and, uniquely in the A1 range, a multi-link rear axle instead of the torsion beam fitted to every front-wheel-drive car.
Engines covered
| Engine | Family | Engine codes | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0 TFSI | EA211 | CHZB | Three-cylinder, 2015 facelift onward |
| 1.2 TFSI | EA111 | CBZA, CBZB | Timing chain — see faults below |
| 1.4 TFSI | EA111 | CAXA, CTHG | CTHG is the twincharged 185 PS unit |
| 1.4 TFSI (COD / ACT) | EA211 | CZCA, CZEA | Cylinder-on-demand, facelift |
| 1.8 TFSI | EA888 | CJSA, CJSB | 192 PS, 2015 onward |
| 2.0 TFSI | EA888 | CDLJ / CWZA | S1 and S1 Sportback |
| 1.6 TDI | EA189 / EA288 | CAYB, CAYC, CXMA | Common-rail diesel |
| 2.0 TDI | EA189 | CFHB, CFHD | Higher-output diesel |
The distinction between the EA111 and EA211 families is the single most important thing to get right on an A1. EA111 engines use a timing chain. EA211 engines use a toothed belt. They are not serviced the same way, they do not fail the same way, and a document that blurs them together is useless to you.
Transmissions
0AF / 02T five-speed manual and 02Q six-speed manual — clutch and release bearing procedures, shift linkage adjustment, fluid specification and capacity. The 02Q is fitted to the S1 and the higher-torque units.
DQ200 seven-speed S tronic (dry clutch) — the gearbox that defines A1 ownership for many people. Coverage includes mechatronic unit diagnosis, clutch adaptation and basic settings, the correct procedure after clutch or mechatronic replacement, and how to tell a genuine mechatronic failure apart from a clutch that has simply lost its adaptation. This distinction saves people four-figure sums, and it is the reason to have proper documentation rather than a forum thread.
Haldex all-wheel drive (S1) — the fifth-generation Haldex coupling, its service interval, the filter and fluid procedure, and pump diagnosis. Neglected Haldex service is why some S1s stop putting power to the rear axle.
Chassis and suspension
Front-wheel-drive A1s use a MacPherson strut front and a torsion beam rear. The S1 and S1 Sportback replace the torsion beam with a four-link rear axle to handle the driven rear wheels — a completely different repair procedure with different alignment data and different torque figures.
Both layouts are documented separately, along with wheel alignment specifications, bushing replacement, and the optional Audi drive select damper system.
Electrical and diagnostics
Full wiring diagrams by model year, connector views and pinouts, CAN bus topology, gateway module, comfort and convenience system, immobiliser and key adaptation, and the MMI infotainment variants fitted across the production run. Fault code tables and measuring block references throughout.
Known A1 8X faults this documentation walks you through
- EA111 timing chain tensioner failure (1.2 and 1.4 TFSI) — the defining A1 fault. The original tensioner can allow the chain to jump under load or on a hot restart, and on an interference engine the result is catastrophic. Diagnosis, the revised tensioner part, and the full chain replacement procedure with correct timing marks and torque values.
- DQ200 seven-speed DSG faults — juddering, harsh engagement, or refusal to select a gear. Mechatronic vs. clutch vs. lost adaptation, in the right diagnostic order.
- EA111 water pump and thermostat housing — coolant loss and overheating from the plastic housing.
- Carbon buildup on intake valves — inherent to direct injection on the TFSI engines; symptoms, inspection and cleaning.
- 1.4 TFSI twincharger (CTHG) — supercharger clutch and bypass valve diagnosis on the 185 PS unit.
- 1.6 TDI EGR cooler and DPF — regeneration logic, forced regen procedure, and blocked EGR diagnosis.
- Haldex fluid neglect on the S1 — no rear drive, or intermittent engagement.
- Rear brake caliper seizure and handbrake cable adjustment.
- Water ingress and blocked plenum drains leading to damp footwells and corroded control modules.

Frequently asked questions
Is the S1 and S1 Sportback included?
Yes. The 2.0 TFSI S1 is covered, including its Haldex all-wheel-drive system, the 02Q six-speed manual, and the four-link rear axle that replaces the torsion beam used on the front-wheel-drive cars.
My 1.4 TFSI is rattling on a hot start. Is the timing chain procedure in here?
Yes. This is the classic EA111 tensioner symptom. The documentation covers diagnosis, the revised tensioner, and the full chain replacement with timing marks and torque figures. Do not keep driving it — on this engine a jumped chain means bent valves.
Does it cover the seven-speed S tronic?
Yes. The DQ200 dry-clutch DSG is covered in detail, including mechatronic diagnosis, clutch adaptation, and the basic-settings routine that must be run after any clutch or mechatronic work.
My A1 is a 2016. Does that make a difference?
A significant one. The 2015 facelift moved the range from the chain-driven EA111 engines to the belt-driven EA211 family. Select your year at checkout and you will receive the set for the correct engine family — not a merged document that mixes both.
Are the diesel engines covered?
Yes — the 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI are both included, with DPF regeneration, EGR diagnosis and injector procedures.
Will this work with VCDS?
Yes. Fault codes, measuring blocks and adaptation channels referenced throughout map directly to VCDS and ODIS. The A1 uses CAN-based diagnostics, so any standard VAG interface will work.
