The 8V is where the A3 became a genuinely modern car — and a considerably more complicated one. It is the first A3 on the MQB platform, and across a single model range it carries belt-driven engines and chain-driven engines, three different S tronic gearboxes, a plug-in hybrid with a live high-voltage system, and a CNG variant.

Almost every mistake made on an 8V starts with someone assuming the car in front of them works like the last one they touched. It usually does not.

What the A3 8V is

Built from 2012 on Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform, the third-generation A3 was sold across more body styles than any A3 before it: three-door hatch (8V1), five-door Sportback (8VA), the four-door Saloon (8VS) — the first ever A3 saloon — and the Cabriolet (8V7). A facelift arrived in 2016, bringing the sharper headlights and, significantly, the option of the Virtual Cockpit digital instrument display.

Note: this set covers the standard A3 range. The S3 and RS3 are different cars, with different engines, gearboxes and drivetrains, and they have their own dedicated documentation — linked at the bottom of this page.

Note the timing column. Every EA211 and EA288 engine in the 8V range uses a toothed belt with a defined replacement interval. Only the EA888 uses a chain. If you own an 8V and you have never thought about your timing belt because “modern Audis use chains”, check your engine code today.

Transmissions

The 8V is fitted with several different S tronic gearboxes depending on engine and model year, and treating them as one unit is the fastest way to a very expensive mistake.

DQ200 seven-speed S tronic (dry clutch) — the smaller petrol and diesel engines. Mechatronic diagnosis, clutch adaptation and basic settings.

DQ250 six-speed S tronic (wet clutch) — the higher-torque engines. Oil and filter service interval, clutch pack condition and mechatronic testing.

DQ400e six-speed S tronic — the e-tron plug-in hybrid gearbox, with the electric motor integrated into the housing. A different unit entirely, documented separately.

MQ250 / MQ350 six-speed manual — clutch, dual-mass flywheel, linkage and fluid specification.

Haldex Generation 5 (A3 quattro) — filter and fluid service, pump diagnosis and controller fault tracing on the all-wheel-drive cars.

Electrical, diagnostics and infotainment

Full wiring diagrams by model year and body style, connector views and pinouts, CAN and LIN topology, the gateway module, comfort and convenience systems, immobiliser and key adaptation.

Infotainment coverage spans the MIB units fitted across the run and the Virtual Cockpit introduced with the 2016 facelift — these are separate systems with separate diagnostic routes, and they are documented as such.

Known A3 8V faults this documentation walks you through

• EA888 Gen 3 water pump and thermostat module — the most common 8V failure by a wide margin. The integrated plastic module cracks or the pump seal fails, and coolant disappears with no visible leak. Diagnosis and full replacement procedure.
• EA888 Gen 3 PCV / crankcase vent diaphragm — rough idle, high fuel trims, oil in the intake, and a whistle from the engine bay. Easy to test properly and easy to misdiagnose as a boost leak.
• EA211 timing belt interval — the 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 and 1.5 TFSI are all belt-driven, as are the EA288 diesels. Owners routinely miss this because they assume the car has a chain.
• DQ200 dry-clutch mechatronic failure — juddering, gear refusal, limp mode. Diagnosis in the correct order before condemning the unit.
• EA288 diesel EGR cooler and DPF — regeneration logic, forced regeneration, differential pressure sensor, and the AdBlue/SCR system where fitted.
• EA888 Gen 3 timing chain tensioner — much improved over the Gen 2, but not immune. Inspection and replacement.
• Haldex Gen 5 fluid neglect (quattro) — intermittent or absent rear drive.
• e-tron PHEV high-voltage faults — battery isolation, de-energisation sequence, and the safety procedure that must be followed before any work near the orange cabling.
• Water ingress and blocked plenum drains — damp footwells and corroded control modules underneath the carpet.
• Electric parking brake — service-mode retraction before rear pad replacement. Force the caliper back without it and you damage the motor.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include the S3 or RS3?

No. The S3 and RS3 are different cars — different engines, different gearboxes, different drivetrains — and they have their own dedicated manual sets, linked below. This covers the standard A3 range: 1.0 to 2.0 TFSI, 1.6 and 2.0 TDI, plus the e-tron and g-tron.

Does my A3 have a timing belt or a chain?

If your engine is a 1.0, 1.2, 1.4 or 1.5 TFSI, or any TDI, it is an EA211 or EA288 and it has a belt with a service interval. If it is a 1.8 or 2.0 TFSI, it is an EA888 with a chain. This is the most consequential question on the 8V, and it is answered properly in the documentation.

My coolant keeps disappearing with no visible leak. Is that in here?

Very likely the EA888 Gen 3 water pump and thermostat module — the defining 8V failure. The plastic housing cracks, or the pump seal fails, and the coolant escapes somewhere it is hard to see. Diagnosis and the full replacement procedure are covered.

Is the A3 Sportback e-tron plug-in hybrid covered?

Yes, including high-voltage safety procedures, battery isolation, the de-energisation sequence and the DQ400e hybrid gearbox. Do not attempt any high-voltage work without correct training and PPE — the documentation is clear about where that line is.

Does it cover the Saloon and Cabriolet?

Yes. Three-door hatch, five-door Sportback, four-door Saloon and Cabriolet are all included, pre-facelift and 2016 facelift.

Which S tronic gearbox do I have?

The smaller engines use the seven-speed dry-clutch DQ200; the higher-torque engines use the six-speed wet-clutch DQ250; the e-tron uses the DQ400e. They fail differently and are serviced differently, and each is documented separately.

Will this work with VCDS?

Yes. Fault codes, measuring blocks and adaptation channels map directly to VCDS and ODIS.
