Description

Audi Q3 (Typ 8U) Service and Repair Manual — 2011 to 2018

The first-generation Q3 is, underneath, a raised A3 8P on the PQ35 platform — and it inherits that car’s habits, good and bad. The petrol engines split into two families that fail in opposite ways. The dry-clutch DSG needs to be understood before it is condemned. And the quattro system depends on a Haldex service that a lot of owners never knew existed until the rear axle stopped driving.

None of this is difficult. All of it rewards knowing what you actually have in front of you.

What the Q3 8U is

Built from 2011 to 2018 on the PQ35 platform, the first Q3 is a compact crossover sharing much of its running gear with the 8P A3 and the Mk5/Mk6 Golf. It was sold with front-wheel drive or quattro.

A facelift arrived in 2015, bringing revised lighting, bumper changes and updated engines across the range.

Note: this set covers the standard Q3 range. The RS Q3 is a different car — a five-cylinder, higher-output model with its own drivetrain — and it has its own documentation, linked at the bottom of this page.

Engines covered

Engine Family Engine codes Notes
1.4 TFSI (COD) EA211 CZDA, CZEA Belt — from facelift
2.0 TFSI EA888 Gen 2 CCZC, CPSA Chain tensioner, oil use
2.0 TFSI EA888 Gen 3 CULB, CULC Facelift onward
2.0 TDI EA189 / EA288 CFFA, CFFB, CLLB, DFTA Common rail, DPF

The 2.0 TFSI appears in two families across the 8U run. The earlier EA888 Gen 2 has a timing chain tensioner weakness and a known appetite for oil; the later EA888 Gen 3 improves on both. Knowing which one you have determines what you should be watching for.

Transmissions

Six-speed manual — clutch, dual-mass flywheel, linkage and fluid specification.

DQ200 seven-speed S tronic (dry clutch) — fitted to the lower-torque engines. Mechatronic diagnosis, clutch adaptation, and how to tell a genuine failure from a lost adaptation before condemning the unit.

DQ250 six-speed S tronic (wet clutch) — the higher-torque engines. The oil and filter service interval that is non-negotiable on this box, plus mechatronic testing.

Haldex all-wheel drive (quattro) — filter and fluid service, pump diagnosis and controller fault tracing. Neglected Haldex fluid is the usual reason a quattro Q3 stops sending power rearward.

Electrical, diagnostics and infotainment

Full wiring diagrams by model year, connector views and pinouts, CAN and LIN topology, the gateway module, comfort systems, immobiliser and key adaptation, and fault code tables with measuring block references. Infotainment covers the MMI systems fitted across the run, including the facelift changes.

Known Q3 8U faults you will be looking up

  • 2.0 TFSI EA888 Gen 2 oil consumption — the piston ring design causes heavy oil burning. The consumption test, the thresholds, and the piston revision.
  • EA888 Gen 2 timing chain tensioner — the tensioner fails, the chain jumps, and on an interference engine that ends it. Cold-start rattle is the warning.
  • DQ200 dry-clutch mechatronic and clutch — juddering, harsh engagement, gear refusal. Diagnosis in the correct order.
  • EA888 water pump and thermostat module — coolant loss with no obvious leak.
  • PCV / crankcase breather diaphragm — rough idle, oil in the intake, whistling.
  • 2.0 TDI EGR and DPF — regeneration logic, forced regen, differential pressure sensor, and AdBlue/SCR where fitted.
  • Carbon buildup on intake valves — inherent to direct injection. Symptoms, inspection and cleaning.
  • Haldex fluid neglect (quattro) — no rear drive.
  • Electronic parking brake — service-mode retraction before rear pad replacement.
  • Rear tailgate strut and wiring in the tailgate loom — the flex point where wiring fatigues and breaks.
  • Water ingress and blocked plenum drains — damp footwells and corroded modules.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include the RS Q3?

No. The RS Q3 is a different car — a five-cylinder 2.5 TFSI with its own drivetrain — and it has its own documentation, linked below. This set covers the standard Q3 range: the 1.4 TFSI, the 2.0 TFSI in both families, and the 2.0 TDI.

Which 2.0 TFSI do I have?

If your engine is a CCZC or CPSA, it is the earlier EA888 Gen 2 — watch the timing chain tensioner and the oil consumption. If it is a CULB or CULC, it is the improved Gen 3. The two are documented separately.

My 2.0 TFSI is using a lot of oil. Is that normal?

Not on a healthy engine. The EA888 Gen 2 has a known piston ring problem that causes it. The consumption test procedure and the piston revision are covered.

My S tronic judders pulling away. Is it failing?

Possibly a lost clutch adaptation rather than a failed unit, especially on the DQ200. The documentation walks the diagnosis in the correct order before you spend money on a mechatronic replacement.

Does it cover the 2015 facelift?

Yes. Both pre-facelift and facelift cars are covered, including the lighting and engine changes.

Is the quattro system covered?

Yes. The Haldex all-wheel-drive system, its fluid and filter service, and pump diagnosis are all included.

Will this work with VCDS or ODIS?

Yes. Fault codes, measuring blocks and adaptation channels map directly to both.
