Audi R8 (Type 42 and Type 4S) Service and Repair Manual — 2007 to 2024
The R8 is Audi’s supercar, and it comes with a supercar’s most notorious maintenance fact: on these cars, replacing the clutch means removing the engine. There is no shortcut, no dropping the gearbox from below — the mid-mounted V8 or V10 comes out. That single reality tells you why proper documentation matters here. This is not a car you approach with guesswork and a haphazard plan.
Built on an aluminium space frame, mid-engined, and sharing its bones with the Lamborghini Gallardo and later the Huracán, the R8 is a genuine exotic wearing Audi reliability — but it is still an exotic, and it must be treated like one.
The two generations
R8 Type 42 (2007–2015)
The original. Launched with the 4.2 FSI V8, later joined by the 5.2 FSI V10. Crucially, this generation offered the legendary gated six-speed manual alongside the R tronic single-clutch automated manual — the last era of a true open-gate metal shifter in a modern supercar. The Spyder convertible arrived in 2009, and the all-electric R8 e-tron appeared late in the run.
R8 Type 4S (2015–2024)
A clean-sheet second generation built on the Modular Sports System platform shared with the Huracán. V10 only — the V8 was dropped — and no manual: every 4S uses the seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox. It introduced the rear-wheel-drive RWS and later RWD variants, breaking from the quattro-only tradition, and a facelift arrived in 2019.
These are two very different cars, and the documentation keeps them apart throughout — engine, gearbox, electronics and body all differ.

Both the V8 and the V10 are naturally aspirated, high-revving, dry-sump engines mounted longitudinally behind the cabin. The dry-sump system alone sets them apart from almost everything else Audi built — oil supply, scavenging and the correct fill procedure are their own subject, and getting it wrong on an engine that revs past 8,000 rpm is not survivable.
Why the engine comes out — and what else that touches
Because the clutch, and much major service, requires engine removal, the documentation gives that procedure the attention it deserves: the removal sequence, the subframe, the wiring and plumbing disconnections, the support and lifting method, and the reassembly torque and alignment.
This is also the moment to address everything that is easier with the engine out — clutch, rear main seal, certain coolant lines, and inspection of components you cannot otherwise reach. The manual treats engine-out as the major event it is, rather than a line item.
Transmissions
Six-speed gated manual (Type 42) — the open-gate shifter, its linkage, the clutch (single-plate) and the hydraulics. A defining feature of the first-generation car and increasingly prized.
R tronic single-clutch automated manual (Type 42) — the early automated gearbox, its hydraulic actuation, the pump and accumulator, and the adaptation and calibration it needs. Misunderstood and often misdiagnosed.
S tronic seven-speed dual-clutch (Type 4S) — the DL800 mid-mounted dual-clutch box. Mechatronic diagnosis, clutch pack condition, the oil and filter service, and the basic settings procedure.
quattro all-wheel drive — the mid-engine quattro system with its front-mounted clutch pack coupling, plus the rear-wheel-drive layout of the RWS and RWD 4S cars. Both are documented.
Body, chassis and electrical
Aluminium Space Frame — like the A8 and A2, the R8’s body is aluminium, and it repairs like no steel car. Welding rules, rivet-bonding, structural adhesives, galvanic corrosion control and body dimensions are all covered. A body shop that treats it like steel will do real, expensive harm.
Magnetic ride — the magnetorheological adaptive damping, its diagnosis and calibration.
Ceramic brakes — where fitted, their specific service, inspection limits and the differences from the steel setup.

Frequently asked questions
Does the clutch really need the engine out?
Yes. On the R8 the mid-mounted engine has to come out to reach the clutch, on both the manual and the automated/dual-clutch cars. The documentation covers the full engine-removal sequence and everything worth doing while it is out, because this is the single biggest job on the car.
Does it cover the gated manual?
Yes — the six-speed open-gate manual of the Type 42, including its linkage, clutch and hydraulics. This gearbox is increasingly prized, and it is documented in full.
Is the aluminium body repair covered?
Yes. The R8 uses an Aluminium Space Frame, and it repairs nothing like a steel car — welding rules, rivet-bonding, structural adhesives and corrosion control are all included. A shop that treats it like steel will cause real harm.
Which generation do I have?
A 2007–2015 car with a V8 option, and possibly a gated manual, is the Type 42. A 2015-onward V10-only car with the S tronic dual-clutch is the Type 4S. The documentation keeps them separate throughout.
My R tronic shifts harshly or gets stuck. Is that in here?
Yes. The single-clutch R tronic on the Type 42 is frequently misdiagnosed. Its hydraulics, pump, accumulator and adaptation are documented so you can diagnose it properly rather than condemning the gearbox.
Is the dry-sump oil system explained?
Yes — the fill and scavenge procedure and the correct level. On an engine that revs past 8,000 rpm, getting this wrong is catastrophic, so it is covered carefully.
