The B5 S4 is one of the most tuned, most loved and most misunderstood Audis ever made — and it all comes down to one engine: the 2.7 twin-turbo V6. Two small turbos tucked into a tight engine bay, quattro, and a chassis that flatters. It is a car people keep for decades and modify endlessly, which means the questions owners ask are specific, technical, and constant. This documentation answers them.
It also tells you the thing every B5 S4 owner learns eventually: almost nothing about the turbos is easy to reach, and a great deal of major work means the front end — or the engine — comes apart.
What the S4 B5 is
Built from 1997 to 2002 on the B5 platform, the S4 is the high-performance version of the A4 B5. It was sold as a saloon (8D2) and an Avant (8D5), always with quattro, and it broke from the naturally aspirated S-car tradition with a bespoke twin-turbocharged V6.
The S4’s quattro is mechanical — a Torsen centre differential, permanent and torque-sensing, with no Haldex, no pump and no filter. This matters, because owners coming from later transverse Audis often expect a Haldex service that does not exist on this car.
The 2.7 biturbo V6 — the heart of the car
The 2.7 twin-turbo V6 (engine code APB, and the related units) is the reason the B5 S4 exists as a cult car. It is a jewel of an engine and a demanding one, and the documentation gives it the depth it needs:
- The two turbochargers — the small K03 turbos, their oil and coolant feeds, the wastegates and the boost control. When one fails, or a line cracks, the diagnosis has to be methodical.
- Access reality — the turbos sit in an extremely tight engine bay. Much serious turbo, manifold and downpipe work requires the front end in service position or the engine out. The documentation covers the removal routes honestly rather than pretending the job is simpler than it is.
- Timing belt — an interference engine, with the front lock carrier sliding into service position for access. Interval, tensioner, water pump and locking positions.

Transmission and drivetrain

Torsen centre differential — mechanical, permanent, torque-sensing, with the rear final drive. Inspection and fluid. No Haldex on this car.
Chassis, brakes and electrical
The S4 runs its own lowered, firmer setup over the A4, with larger brakes and specific alignment data — all documented distinctly from the standard car. Frequently asked questions
My S4 has lost power. Is it the turbos?
